“I’m trying to focus on something, bring it back alive from the uncharted areas of the inner image, inner space.”
- Jordan Belson
I made this body of work alongside my dissertation titled: ‘The Craft of Dreaming’. Through this research I trained to lucid dream and read into what my dreams were telling me. The goal was to collaborate with my unconscious mind.
Simon Carroll really inspired my throughout this work and into future projects too. His connection to material was so powerful. Especially his sand paintings, if you have not seen the videos I would highly recommend them. His ceramic forms have such a fluid and lively nature. They move in their static forms. I was trying to emulate this nature and allow the piece to speak for itself in its movement.
The form of the jug became clear to me to use. Not only by the inspiring forms of Carroll’s jugs but also the nature of the form. There is a sense of pouring out, like how the unconscious pours out into our dreams. It asks of the viewer to consider what is inside of them that wants to pour out. Maybe through the practice of lucid dreams they too can understand themselves a bit more.
